Integration and Implementation Insights (also known as i2Insights) is a community weblog (blog) for sharing methods, frameworks, processes, concepts, theories and competencies to better understand and act on complex societal and environmental problems (problems like refugee crises, global climate change, and inequality).

This communication skills guide to practice will explore several common communication scenarios that you may find yourself in, and help you navigate and master each interaction you have in your day-to-day practice.

Communication is the process used to exchange information and it is considered effective when both parties, the sender and the receiver, give the same or very similar meaning to the message being conveyed. Health care is the treatment of ill health and medical conditions. Social care is the care and support of vulnerable people (with or without ill health and medical conditions) such as elderly people or children.

Australia’s public service is no stranger to reform. In the past nine years, it has undergone three significant reviews of its policy advising capabilities, all of which broadly agreed that its policy advice tends towards reticence and needs to be strengthened. While these reviews triggered reform processes to improve how policy advice is built, a glaring gap remains largely unexplored: the language of policy advice itself. How public servant policy advisers articulate arguments, communicate ideas and influence decision-makers has profound implications for how their policy recommendations land and whether the public interest is served. It’s an area urgently in need of reform.
