Systematic Reviews in the Sciences

Getting started

This is a guide to resources and collections available from ANU Library which may help you with your systematic review in the sciences.

This guide will:

  • introduce you to different types of reviews focusing on systematic reviews undertaken in the sciences
  • provide information to help you get started on your systematic review, including how to search and where to search
  • outline EndNote and Covidence and how you can use these
  • provide links to useful resources
  • let you know how the Library can support you.

How can the Library help?

Librarians are here to help, and can meet with you for an individual research consultation at a time that suits you, either online or face to face.

You can book a research consultation with a subject specialist librarian to help you find and access information, or email us science.library@anu.edu.au or call +61 2 6125 3517.

During a consultation session, a subject specialist librarian can help you search for, locate and access relevant literature for your review.

Ways a librarian can assist:

  • help create a complex search statement using relevant keywords and subject headings, and offer tips on refining the search strategy for the greatest retrieval of relevant material
  • identify relevant databases and grey literature resources in which to conduct literature searches related to your topic
  • explain how to retrieve full-text articles, and use the Document Supply Service (DSS) to access hard-to-find full text articles for screening and review
  • help you use the reference management software EndNote to manage the research gathering process
  • provide information on accessing Covidence to assist with the literature inclusion/exclusion review process

Librarians do not assist with the following aspects of your systematic review. Please talk with your supervisor for assistance with the following:

  • devising the review question
  • developing the protocol for a systematic review
  • assessing when you have collected all of the relevant literature
  • analysing the data and writing up the review
