Systematic Reviews in the Sciences

Export search results to groups in EndNote

Groups are a way to organise your references. They can be useful if you want to organise references by subject (eg “mining”) or function (eg “Chapter 1”). References can be added to more than one group.

The default group for your EndNote library is “All References”. Any references without a group also appear in the “Unfiled” group. You can create up to 500 groups in each EndNote library References can appear in multiple groups.

Creating a new group;

  • Under the Groups menu, select Create Group
  • A new group will appear in the My Library pane. Overtype the default name to change the name of the group eg name your group the database where your results were exported from, SCOPUS or PubMed etc.
  • You may wish to mention in your methodoligy how may results you retrieved from each database, and note how many duplicates you had. You can also move your duplicate to another library, for potentional future reference if required rather than moving them out of the trash.

There may be limits with the number of records you can export in a single download. Should your search be more than those limits, you can chunk the export by year.

Limits of numbers of records that can be exported from a selection of commonly used bibliographic databases for literature/systematic reviews in one export are below;

  Scopus ProQuest Web of Science PubMed APA PsycInfo/Medline
No. of records in a single export 1,200 20,000 1,000 10,000 1,000

Please refer to the EndNote for Science (databases) pdf below for further information on exporting records to EndNote.

Deduplicate your library

Deduplicating your library;

  • You will likely import more than one copy of the same reference when you are searching across several differnt publisher platforms.  EndNote can remove the extra copies for you.

  • Go to the Library menu and choose Find Duplicates. Choose which record to keep,  Keep This Record. Once the duplicates are identified, you can delete them using References > Move References to Trash.

  • You can now upload your deduplicated library to Covidence. Please refer to the Covidence tab for instructions on how to do this.
