Systematic Reviews in the Sciences

What is Covidence?

Covidence is an online systematic review program developed by, and for, systematic reviewers. It can import citations from reference managers like EndNote, facilitate the screening of abstracts and full-text, populate risk of bias tables, assist with data extraction, and export to all common formats.

Covidence requires a special registration and login procedure

ANU students and staff can access Covidence through the ANU Library website.

Importing references from EndNote to Covidence

To import studies to Covidence from EndNote, you'll first export your studies either as an XML file or as an RIS file.

To export your studies:

  • Highlight the references you wish to export
  • Click on File >> Export...
  • Select your file type and export style
  • To export as an XML, select "XML" under "Save file as type:", and your choice of output style
  • To export as an RIS, select "Text Only" under "Save file as type:", and "RefMan (RIS) Export" under "Output Style:"

How to use EndNote to bulk upload full texts:

  • Search for the full-text for the reference in EndNote by right mouse clicking on the reference and choosing Fins full-text
  • Once you have attached the articles to the studies in EndNote, highlight all the studies by clicking on the top study, clicking "Shift" and clicking the bottom study. Then click "File" and then "Export".
  • Make sure you select the "EndNote XML" format and select "Show All Fields" when exporting.
  • Name the file something you will remember and make a note of the location, because you will need to find it when importing the XML into Covidence.
  • If you open your documents you will see that the XML file has been downloaded (in this example, "Upload test EndNote Library.xml"). Your EndNote Library folder should be saved on your desktop, it will be named the same as your Library and end in .Data (in this example, "Upload test EndNote Library. Data"). Within your library folder you should also see a "PDF" folder, all the PDFs you have found will be downloaded into the "PDF" folder. There is no need to rename the pdf files or manipulate your folder structure after exporting out of your reference manager and, in fact this will cause issues when uploading to Covidence.
  • Now you are ready to upload the XML file into Covidence at step 3 on the bulk upload page.
  • Now you are ready to upload the “PDF” folder in step 4 on the bulk upload page.

For a detailed walkthrough on how to bulk import PDFs, you can view this video and refer to this Covidence page
