Systematic Reviews in the Sciences

How to search

Regardless of the type of review you undertake, all reviews involve searching for and locating relevant studies and literature.

Steps in this process include:

1. Developing a clear research question or topic

2. Identifying the main idea or key concepts in your question or topic

3. Finding relevant synonyms for your key concepts

4. Using Boolean Operators and Search Syntax

5. Replicating your search in multiple databases

6. Knowing which databases are relevant to your subject area

7. Documenting your search

Remember that in its early stages, searching is an iterative process requiring adjustments to your search strategy to ensure a strong foundation for your review.
