This high-level reading course in Sanskrit literature is designed to introduce students to the broadest possible range of literary genres including: epic; courtly poetry; drama; Upaniadic verse; sutras; and the early Vedic dialetc (the precursor of Classical Sanskrit).

This course introduces the foundations of the balance of traditional practice of textual reception (reading and grammar) with language production (speaking, chanting and singing).

This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills at an introductory level of Sanskrit including a vocabulary of about 250 items; recognition of grammatic structures; reading short texts; translating basic sentences; conducting simple conversations; and, demonstrating a general understanding of the history, origins, status, and uses of Sanskrit.

This course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to: read simple epic texts smoothly and accurately; chant texts in sloka metre; translate vocabularly; recognise the range of grammatical structures; appraise the linguistic registers of the root text; and, demonstrate knowledge of the social and historical contexts of epic Sanskrit texts.

This course aims to balance the traditional practice of textual reception (reading and grammar) with language production (speaking, chanting and singing). Students will learn to read simple epic and prose narrative texts; master some basic spoken Sanskrit; and, chant and recite with a good degree of accuracy.
