The Centre stimulates education and research on legal issues arising from the mining, energy and natural resources sectors of the Western Australian economy. Is is the successor to the Centre for Commercial and Resources Law, which was established within the Law School at the University of Western Australia in 1990.

From the University of Melbourne Law School. CREEL was established in 1986. Until 1996 it was known as the Centre for Natural Resources Law.

A joint initiative of the International Law and Policy Group of the UNSW Law School, and the Australian Human Rights Centre. The Initiative aims to develop and coordinate inter- and cross-disciplinary collaborative research on legal and policy issues related to climate change.
