National Research Institutions

The ANU is located in close proximity to cultural and research institutions of national and international significance. ANU staff and students are encouraged to explore the collections and services of the organisations listed below.

Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS)
AIATSIS is a world-renowned research, collections and publishing organisation that holds the world's largest collection dedicated to Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories. Onsite and online reference services advise on collection access and restrictions.
Australian War Memorial
The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The collection contains materials to help researchers find connections with the wartime experiences of men and women who served in Australia's military services.
Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
CSIRO is Australia's national science organisation and one of the largest and most diverse scientific research organisations in the world. The organisation manages national research infrastructure and collections, and the CSIRO Library delivers information resources and services to support this research.
Geoscience Australia
Geoscience Australia is Australia's pre-eminent public sector geoscience organisation. The N H (Doc) Fisher Geoscience Library holds one of the most comprehensive collections of geoscientific information resources in the Southern Hemisphere.
National Archives of Australia
The National Archives of Australia can best be described as the memory of our nation – collecting and preserving Australian Government records that reflect our history and identity.
National Film and Sound Archive (NSFA)
The NFSA collection holds more than 3 million works, including films, television and radio programs, videos, audio tapes, records, compact discs, phonograph cylinders and wire recordings. It also encompasses documents and artefacts such as photographs, posters, lobby cards, publicity items, scripts, costumes, props, memorabilia, oral histories, and vintage equipment.
National Gallery of Australia (NGA)
The NGA is Australia's national cultural institution for the visual arts. The NGA Research Library is a world-class art library housing the most comprehensive collection of visual arts literature in Australia and documenting the history and development of our nation's art and culture.
National Library of Australia (NLA)
The NLA holds the greatest collection in the world of material relating to Australia and the Australian people. It ranges from the earliest European works about the Great Southern Land to the most current publications.
National Museum of Australia
With a focus on Indigenous histories and cultures, European settlement and Australians' interaction with the environment, the Museum brings to life the rich and diverse stories of Australia through objects, ideas and events. The Research Library maintains a collection that reflects the core activities and collecting themes of the National Museum of Australia.
National Museum of Democracy
The Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House helps people to understand Australia’s social and political history by interpreting the past and present and exploring the future.
National Portrait Gallery
The youngest of Australia's national cultural institutions, the gallery holds a collection of portraits that reflect the breadth and complexity of Australian history and society. The Research Library is a small, professionally focused research collection tightly aligned to the Gallery's permanent collection and exhibition program.
