ANU Council Statement

In 2017, following an extensive process of consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, the Uluru Statement from the Heart called for 'the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution'.
With an historic referendum to enact this call planned for 2023, The Australian National University Council unreservedly supports enshrining an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice in the Constitution, recognising its alignment with the University's national mission.
The Council acknowledges that differing views exist within the University community and that the University is a place where respectful informed debate and freedom of expression are actively encouraged.
The Council thanks the Academic Board of the University for its work and guidance, and acknowledges that it also unreservedly supports enshrining an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice in the Constitution.

Australian Indigenous Studies at ANU
ANU is committed to creating opportunities for developing Indigenous Studies across all disciplinary areas. Australian Indigenous Studies is part of the University’s Strategic Plan, which recognises our unique national responsibilities. While Australian Indigenous Studies is convened from the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, this is a whole-of-University initiative supported by all Colleges.
Justice & the Law: Indigenous Perspectives
Insightful dialogue about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives on law and justice, land rights and, following on from this, about the role of lawyers in navigating the intersections between Indigenous perspectives on law/justice and the Australian legal system.
Responding to Common Concerns about the Voice
This document has been prepared by the First Nations Portfolio (FNP) at ANU. It provides responses to common concerns currently being raised about the Voice. It is intended to help people better understand some of the complex issues and confusing commentary that has surrounded the Voice proposal so they can make an informed decision when they vote at the referendum later this year.

First Nations Portfolio

As a branch of the University’s executive, the First Nations Portfolio works with colleagues across the University to ensure the ANU is a world leader in teaching and research of First Nations issues. It also works to ensure that the University makes a leading contribution to national policy in the relationship between Indigenous Australians and the nation.
