What are journals?

A scholarly journal is a publication released in regular instalments which contains research relating to a particular subject area. These are often referred to as periodicals or serials.

Journals are useful when you:

are seeking information for your assignment or literature review
need to find recently published papers on a particular topic
want to identify important and current research in your field
commence the ‘scoping exercise’ for your research project.

Find journals using SuperSearch

SuperSearch is a portal that provides a single search across the majority of ANU Library resources.

SuperSearch is a great place to start searching for journal articles. Here are some tips to get you started:

Refine your results by using search filters.
- Select Articles under Format to search for articles only.
- Select Journals under Format to search for journals only.
Click Journal Search from the top menu to search by title or browse by category.
Use Advance search to filter by a particular date of publication, language or format.

Find print journals

If you can't find the journal you need online, you can also search for print issues. If a print journal is available, it will list the Library branch it is located in under Location.

Issues of journals published before 1990 are usually stored off-campus at the ANU Print Repository. To access these, go to the item record and click on Print Repository under Find in Library and you will be prompted to fill in a request form. Make sure you are logged in!

Inner Asia
Published bi-annually for the Mongolia and Inner Asia Studies Unit (MIASU) at the University of Cambridge, Inner Asia is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal with emphasis on the social sciences, humanities and cultural studies. Published since 1999, Inner Asia is currently one of the very few research-orientated publications in the world in which scholars can address the contemporary and historical problems of the region.

Central Asian Survey
Central Asian Survey is a peer reviewed, multi-disciplinary journal concerned with the history, politics, cultures, religions and economies of the Central Asian and Caucasian regions. These include primarily the republics of former Soviet Central Asia and the South and North Caucasus. Also covered are Chinese Xinjiang, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey in relation to their links/policies vis-à-vis Central Asia.
Central Asiatic Journal

The Central Asiatic Journal has been published since 1955, focusing on the linguistic, cultural and historical heritage of Central Asia and historically contingent regions. Our global pool of authors comprise specialists in the central Asian core region (Mongolia, Turkestan/Xinjiang, Tibet, southern Siberia, Manchuria) but also, by extension, in a secondary sphere radiating into western Asia (the Turko-Iranian sphere), the Himalayas, China’s Han-majority provinces and the Pacific fringe (Korea, Japan and eastern Siberia).
Journal of Eurasian Studies
Journal of Eurasian Studies is a peer reviewed, open access, area studies journal published by the Asia-Pacific Research Center, Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea.

Nationalities Papers is the place to turn for cutting edge multidisciplinary work on nationalism, migration, diasporas, and ethnic conflict. The journal’s geographical emphasis is on Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus, and Eurasia.
Post-Soviet Affairs
This journal is devoted to the study of the polities, economies, societies, and foreign relations of Russia and other republics of the former USSR. Its primary focus is on the tension between impulses of reform, liberalization, and modernization in the region and legacies of corruption, suppression of civil liberties, and other manifestations of the Soviet (and pre-Soviet) past.
Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History
The journal regularly publishes forums, discussions, and special issues; it regularly translates important works by Russian and European scholars into English; and it publishes in every issue in-depth, lengthy review articles, review essays, and reviews of Russian, Eurasian, and European works that are rarely, if ever, reviewed in North American Russian studies journals.
Eurasian Geographies and Economics
This journal publishes original papers on geographical and economic issues in the Eurasian region, broadly defined as encompassing China, Russia, India, South East Asia, the former Soviet Union and Europe.
