This LibGuide helps HDR & Honours students find resources used in the Word for Academic Writing workshops delivered by the ANU Library digital literacy training staff. The concepts and templates can also be used for essays or formatting a journal article or writing a report.  All the workshop materials follow the process of planning the document, creating the document structure, creating styles, creating a document template, create chapters from the template or apply the template to the existing chapters and finally create a master document.

Referencing is an integral part of academic writing, and involves giving recognition to the source of anyone else's ideas that you have used or quoted in your essay or assignment. Some simple tips for referencing successfully are: 

1. Acknowledge direct quotations, facts, and figures, as well as the ideas and theories that you use.
2. Check with your lecturer for the preferred referencing style used by your school.
3. Whichever referencing or citation style you prefer, be consistent throughout your assignment.

Commonly used referencing styles include MLA, Chicago, and Harvard. The ANU does not adhere to a standard referencing style, so you should check with your lecturers to ensure that you submit your work using the correct style. The ANU has policies and procedures on academic honesty and how to avoid plagiarism - for which there can be serious consequences.
