The Academic Skills & Learning Centre assists students to develop key academic skills and communication strategies.  The Centre offers services to help all students from first year undergraduate to final year PhD.

Referencing is an integral part of academic writing and involves giving recognition to the source of anyone else's ideas that you have used or quoted in your essay or assignment. Some simple tips for referencing accurately are:

• acknowledge direct quotations, facts and figures, as well as the ideas and theories that you use;
• check with your lecturer about the preferred referencing style used by your school;
• whichever referencing or citation style you use, be consistent throughout your assignment.

The Chicago Manual of Style is now available online, including the complete guide, quick guide, video tutorials and more.

The ANU has policies and procedures on academic integrity and how to avoid plagiarism.

EndNote is a software program that allows you to save and manipulate your references. EndNote works with Microsoft Word and allows you to insert your references and citations into essays and assignments. EndNote automates much of the work of formatting references and helps to ensure consistency in your referencing.

 EndNote is available for students and staff to use for free while studying or working at ANU.

Classes on how to best use EndNote are held regularly during semester time. Details and registration information can be found on the ANU Training website.
