*.enl

A database of your EndNote references. The number of references is only limited by your system (storage capacity etc.).

EndNote library data folder

*.DATA

Stores attachments to the references in your EndNotelibrary. It needs to be in the same location as your library file.

Compressed EndNote library file

*.enlx

An EndNote library and its data folder can be compressed from File > Compressed library (.enlx).... When a compressed library file is opened it expands and creates an *.enl file and a *.DATA folder.

EndNote connect file (online search)

*.enz

This file allows online searching and downloading of references from within EndNote by connecting directly to an online database or catalogue.

EndNote filter

*.enf

Enables importing references from databases and online catalogues without Online Search tool.

EndNote style

*.ens

This file enables the correct formatting of citations and bibliographies. A style determines their final appearance (e.g. Harvard, APA).

Text file

*.txt

A text file contains only text and no formatting. It can be read by most word processors.

Word file

*.docx

File format used for Microsoft Word documents.
