File extensions associated with the EndNote program are explained in the table below.

An EndNote library and its data folder can be compressed from File > Compressed library (.enlx).... When a compressed library file is opened it expands and creates an *.enl file and a *.DATA folder.

This file enables the correct formatting of citations and bibliographies. A style determines their final appearance (e.g. Harvard, APA).
